The Elevator Update โ Sell Your Work in 30 Seconds
You shipped something. Now say it in 30 seconds: here's what I built, here's the impact, here's why it matters. The elevator update is the spoken self-promo that lands with leaders.

The idea
An elevator update is a 30-second spoken self-promo for something you shipped. It's not a bragging or formal pitch โ it's a quick, warm update to a leader or peer. The structure is: what I shipped, the impact, why it matters. E.g., "I shipped a new filter feature last week. It cut support tickets by 40% because customers can now find answers faster. I'm really proud of it because it solves the #1 request we've been getting." That's 30 seconds. It's not about being polished โ it's about being specific and showing impact. Leaders don't know what you did unless you tell them. The elevator update is how you stay visible without seeming like you're bragging.
Who is this for?
Amit Desai
Engineer ยท Bangalore
Amit shipped an API that reduced load time by 30%. His manager had no idea.
Next ship: "I shipped the async payment feature. It cut checkout time from 8 to 3 seconds for 40% of users." (30 seconds, hallway). His manager mentioned it in a meeting. Visibility compounded.
"Good work doesn't speak for itself. You have to say it. The 30-second update is how people know."
What you'll get
One 30-second elevator update written out
Something you shipped last week + the impact + why it matters, timed to 30 seconds.
Delivered it aloud to one leader
In a meeting, a hallway, or a 1-on-1 โ you said it out loud and it landed.
Visibility that sticks
Leaders know what you did because you told them specifically and quickly.
A repeatable pattern for self-promo
Every week you ship something, you have a 30-second update ready. That's how visibility compounds.

Do the challenge
1Pick one thing you shipped in the last 1โ2 weeks
Could be a feature, a process improvement, a project completion, a fix, a launch. Anything you did that had an impact.
2Write the 30-second structure: What + Impact + Why
What did you build? (1 sentence) + What's the impact? (1 sentence) + Why does it matter? (1 sentence). Read it out loud and time it โ 30 seconds.
๐ก I shipped: [what you built] Impact: [what changed as a result] Why it matters: [why this is important] Can you tighten this into 3 sentences that fit in 30 seconds when spoken?
3Say it out loud to someone (mirror, colleague, friend first)
Don't write it for email โ speak it. Get comfortable with the rhythm and timing. You should sound warm, not corporate.
4Deliver it to a leader this week (manager, skip-level, peer)
A 1-on-1, a hallway, the end of a meeting โ catch them for 30 seconds and tell them what you shipped and the impact. Specific and quick wins.
